Tổng thống đắc cử Trump đã gọi vấn đề biến đổi khí hậu là một trò chơi khăm của Trung Quốc, hứa sẽ dỡ bỏ các chính sách về khí hậu và năng lượng sạch của Mỹ, và bổ nhiệm những người phủ nhận vấn đề biến đổi khí hậu có quan hệ với ngành công nghiệp nhiên liệu hóa thạch vào nhóm chuyển giao quyền lực và Nội các của ông.
Đáp lại, hơn 800 nhà khoa học về khoa học Trái đất và các chuyên gia về năng lượng tại 46 bang đã ký một bức thư ngỏ gửi đến Donald Trump, thôi thúc ông thực thi 6 bước then chốt nhằm xử lí vấn đề biến đổi khí hậu để giúp bảo vệ "nền kinh tế, an ninh quốc gia, y tế và an toàn công cộng của nước Mỹ."
Tất cả những người ký tên đều đang theo đuổi hoặc đã có bằng tiến sĩ trong các ngành học có liên quan, với một vài trường hợp ngoại lệ đối với các nhà lãnh đạo khác trong lĩnh vực này. Tất cả đều là người Mỹ hoặc đang làm việc tại Hoa Kỳ.

Chúng tôi, những người ký tên dưới đây, rất mong ngài có hành động tức thì và lâu dài chống lại sự biến đổi khí hậu do con người gây ra. Chúng tôi viết thư này nhân danh những cá nhân có quan tâm, thống nhất trong việc nhận thức rằng khoa học có tính rõ ràng và nước Mỹ có trách nhiệm phải đáp ứng.
Sự biến đổi khí hậu đe dọa đến nền kinh tế, an ninh quốc gia, y tế và an toàn công cộng[1],[2],[3],[4] của nước Mỹ. Một số cộng đồng đã phải chịu tác động của nó, với các nhóm thiểu số và người thu nhập thấp bị ảnh hưởng một cách không cân xứng.
Vào thời điểm quan trọng này của lịch sử nhân loại, các nước đang hướng về Hoa Kỳ trong việc nhận lấy nhiệm vụ lãnh đạo [các hành động chống lại sự biến đổi khí hậu]: thực thi các bước để tăng cường, chớ không phải làm suy yếu, các nỗ lực của quốc gia này nhằm giải quyết cuộc khủng hoảng này. Với việc thế giới đang nhìn vào chúng ta, và trong bối cảnh bất ổn và lo lắng về cách thức chính quyền của ngài sẽ giải quyết vấn đề này, chúng tôi kêu gọi ngài bắt đầu thực thi những bước dưới đây ngay sau khi nhậm chức:
1.           Làm cho nước Mỹ trở thành một nước lãnh đạo về năng lượng sạch. Đại đa số người Mỹ – bất luận thuộc đảng Cộng hòa, đảng Dân chủ, hoặc độc lập – ủng hộ công cuộc nghiên cứu và triển khai năng lượng tái tạo[5]. Nắm bắt các cơ hội kinh tế to lớn của tiến trình chuyển đổi sang một nguồn năng lượng hiệu quả, một xã hội với mức các-bon thấp[6],[7]. Sử dụng một phần trong ngân sách đã cam kết 1 ngàn tỉ USD để phát triển cơ sở hạ tầng trong việc mở rộng nguồn năng lượng sạch dân chủ hóa, tăng cường khả năng cạnh tranh của Hoa Kỳ, và tạo công ăn việc làm cho nước Mỹ[8]. Kể từ năm 2008, cứ 33 việc làm thì ngành công nghệ sạch đã tạo ra một việc làm tại Hoa Kỳ. "Kỹ thuật viên năng lượng gió" là việc làm có sức tăng nhanh nhất tại nước Mỹ, và ngành công nghiệp năng lượng mặt trời đã sử dụng nhiều cựu chiến binh nhiều hơn bất kỳ ngành công nghiệp nào khác[9].
2.           Giảm thiểu mức ô nhiễm carbon và sự phụ thuộc vào nhiên liệu hóa thạch của nước Mỹ. Đa số người Mỹ ủng hộ vấn đề này[5]. Hãy đảm bảo với họ rằng các chính sách giúp cắt giảm lượng phát thải khí nhà kính, giảm thiểu mức ô nhiễm không khí và nước, và thúc đẩy tăng trưởng năng lượng sạch, cải tiến đổi mới, và việc làm – chẳng hạn như Kế hoạch sản xuất năng lượng điện sạch, các khoản tín dụng thuế năng lượng có gia hạn, và các tiêu chuẩn hoạt động hiệu quả tự động – sẽ được duy trì. Tiếp tục công cuộc tài trợ và sự linh hoạt của các cơ quan liên bang trong việc giải quyết vấn đề biến đổi khí hậu, trong đó Cơ quan Bảo vệ Môi trường, Bộ Năng lượng và Cơ quan Quản trị Hàng không và Không gian Quốc gia, là chìa khóa để đạt được những mục tiêu này.
3.           Tăng cường công tác chuẩn bị và khả năng phục hồi về vấn đề khí hậu của nước Mỹ. Chỉ trong 5 năm qua, bão tố, lũ lụt, hạn hán, và cháy rừng đã gây thiệt hại trên 250 tỷ USD[10]. Khi mà sự biến đổi khí hậu tiếp tục gia tăng về tần suất và mức độ nghiêm trọng của các sự kiện cực đoan như vậy, thì đó cũng là gánh nặng của tất cả những người nộp thuế phải trả tiền cứu trợ và phục hồi sau thiên tai[3].  Hãy ra tay giúp bảo vệ và củng cố các cộng đồng, nền kinh tế, và nguồn tài nguyên thiên nhiên của nước Mỹ bằng cách đầu tư vào nguồn năng lượng hiện đại, thân thiện với khí hậu, vào ngành giao thông, xây dựng, và cơ sở hạ tầng về nguồn nước.
4.           Công khai thừa nhận rằng sự biến đổi khí hậu là một mối đe dọa thực sự, do con người gây ra, và mang tính cấp bách. Nếu không, ngài sẽ trở thành nhà lãnh đạo chính phủ duy nhất trên thế giới chối bỏ khoa học khí hậu[11]. Quan điểm của ngài sẽ xung đột với hầu như tất cả các nhà khoa học khí hậu, hầu hết các nhà kinh tế, các chuyên gia quân sự, các công ty sản xuất nhiên liệu hóa thạch và các nhà lãnh đạo doanh nghiệp khác, và hai phần ba những người Mỹ lo lắng về vấn đề này[1],[2],[12],[13],[14],[15].
5.           Bảo vệ tính trung thực khoa học trong việc hoạch định chính sách. Trong chiến dịch tranh cử của ngài, ngài đã nói rằng "chính quyền của ngài sẽ đảm bảo tính minh bạch [khoa học] và trách nhiệm giải trình không thiên vị về mặt chính trị[16]." 6.           Duy trì sự cam kết của nước Mỹ đối với Hiệp định Paris về khí hậu.
